Many residents connect with the sea, either as an enthusiastic surfers, surfing the waves at Long Beach or Outer Kom, Krans and Sunset. or just walking on our beautiful white beaches that stretch for some 5km. along the Atlantic seaboard.Cray fishing is an extremely important facet of life here. During the season many of us enjoy catching & eating this delicacy. Our local Slipway can become rather busy.
Wild Life in Kommetjie:
Baboons which are often seen, but for the most part are kept out of the residential areas by our Baboon monitors. Southern Right Whales can be seen each year, Cape Clawless Otters often seen frolicking in the sea and at the mouths of streams.
Francolins and Guinea fowl are common and sometimes noisy residents of the village. Porcupines often make their presence felt on the mountains slopes. The African Goshawk and Spotted Eagle Owls are common withinthe village. Flamingo’s have been frequent visisters at the Kom. The rocky island at “the kom” is listed in most Western Cape Bird Books as being one of the top birding spots in the region. We share our space with an abundance of fauna and flora that enriches our lives.
